Every time you knit something you learn something new. Remember the first time you figured out just what SSK directed your knitting needles to do? Remember that Aha! moment, that Eureka! moment, or that moment of epiphany? Then every time you saw SSK after that, your hands automatically slipped those first two stitches knitwise, slid the left needle into the fronts of those stitches and knit them together. The best knitting patterns don't merely provide a list of mechanical instructions -- they teach the skills. They tell you why you're doing what you're doing, so you can own the skill and use it on another project.
Since we haven't found many such teaching patterns, we're designing and writing our own. Each pattern will provide at least one moment in which the knitter thinks "Aha! That's how to do that" and/or "Aha! That's why we do it that way."
One reason we can do that is that we're available and reachable through our website, www.ahamomentknits.com. The patterns can be as long as necessary. And when you have questions, contact us, and we'll respond. Is there a term you'd like us to include in our Visual Glossary. Is there something in a pattern about which you'd like a bit of further explanation? Best yet, have you got an Aha! Moment to share with everyone? Let us know. We want to hear from you.
Karen's beaded lace designs are works of art that are a pleasure to knit. Her patterns are famous for their clarity. If you've never tried lace knitting or want to learn it in an organized manner, check out Learn to Lace Sampler Scarf, which gently teaches the hows and whys of lace knitting. If your skills are at the next level, try Pearly Wave Shawl. Karen's work is published by Vogue Knitting (magazines and books), Piecework, Knitter's Magazine, Knit 1 and Knit 'n Style. She's designed for such yarn companies as Lorna's Laces, Jade Sapphire, Dream in Color and Brown Sheep, among others. Her work will appear in the new lace design book from Sixth & Spring and in lace expert Myrna Stahman's next book.
Author of Knit Fix: Problem Solving for Knitters (Interweave, 2006). Says Clara Parkes in Knitter's Review about Lisa, now our editor at That Aha! Moment Knits, that: "She not only knows her knitting, but she expresses her knowledge with the skill and ease of a seasoned writer." Lisa loves working with color: check out Lightning Shawl and Paisley Straight Up. She can also dream up way too many yarn possibilities for any given project, which is why she always has the feeling she can't knit fast enough. Lisa has taught knitting for over 10 years, paying close attention to what leads each student to that Aha! Moment, when the knitter owns a new skill. The patterns she designed and edited while Pattern Design Director for Misti Alpaca each contain learning moments.
If you see a stylish sweater on someone who looks like she belongs on a Paris runway, that's our Maureen. She's taught knitting for years -- and has honed designs for sweaters that are fashion-forward. Check out her Willow Wrap and Zara, not to mention Paisley Straight Up, a team effort by Maureen and Lisa (what Maureen calls "the combo platter").
Carol is our secret weapon, our font of all garment construction knowledge. After 26 years as a professor of Fashion Design and Merchandising, Carol now teaches knitting, machine knitting and design seminars around the country. Her designs have been published in three of the One Skein Wonder books and by yarn companies. One of her specific loves is designing handknits for children: see Gummi Worm Sweater and Boy-O-Boy Cardigan for easy-to-knit designs from baby through toddler sizes.
